Aero Carnival Helps Celebrate WPAFB's 100th Anniversary |
Wright Patterson Air Force Base celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2017. One of the tributes to this anniversary will be the National Park Service's annual Aero Carnival which will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 10:30 to 5:00. It will take place on the Huffman Prairie Flying Field on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the very place where Orville and Wilbur Wright conducted tests and flights as early as 1904. This will be a special year for Aero Carnival in celebrating WPAFB's origins. The Army Air Service established Wilbur Wright field on May 22, 2017 and then McCook Field in November of that year. McCook was the test field where many aviation experiments and milestones were established, and Wright Field was a flying field, supply depot, and armorers' school. McCook Field closed in 1927, partly due to space restrictions, and its functions were moved to Wright Field, and in 1931 part of Wright Field was designated as Patterson Field. In 1948 Wright Field and Patterson were merged into Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The Aero Carnival event is free to all and access is through Gate 16A off of State Route 444. Concours to Celebrate “The Cars of Orville Wright” |
Held each September, Dayton History's Concours d’Elegance is Dayton’s premier antique and classic automobile and motorcycle show. This year's event at Carillon Historical Park is on Sunday, September 17, from 10 AM to 4 PM. In addition to the featured marques, there will be an aviation connection, with reference to Orville Wright. As described by Dayton History: "For the first time ever, Concours will celebrate the Cars of Orville Wright, displaying a variety of automobiles similar to those owned by the world's first pilot. Known as a sharp dresser, a fanatic for keeping his shoes shined, Orville was also known as an early automobile enthusiast with a heavy right foot. With license plates OW-1, Oakwood police officers were instructed to allow the famed pilot to ignore the speed limit (which he did regularly) as he drove to and from his Hawthorn Hill home" |

Air Force 70th Birthday Art Exhibit |
News Release - National Museum of the United States Air Force September 9, 2017: A special exhibit highlighting the 70th Birthday of the U.S. Air Force will open on Sept. 9 at the Air Force’s national museum. Seventy pieces of art, one representing a significant event for each year in Air Force history, will be displayed in the museum’s art gallery. |
The exhibit titled, “American Airmen: Breaking Barriers Since 1947 - Commemorating 70 Years of Air & Space Power through Art,” showcases the innovation, teamwork and proud heritage of the U.S. Air Force, and highlights the unique contributions of its service members. The artwork, provided by the U.S. Air Force Art Program, includes pieces from artists such as Keith Ferris, Maxine McCaffrey, Robert McCall, William S. Phillips and John Witt. With the experience of fighting in two world wars during the first half of the twentieth century, United States military aviators advocated for the creation of a separate air force. On Sept. 18, 1947, their efforts came to fruition when the U.S. Air Force was established as a separate service under the Department of Defense, equal to the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. This exhibit at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force will be open for one year. Admission and parking are free. The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is the world’s largest military aviation museum. With free admission and parking, the museum features more than 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles and thousands of artifacts amid more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space. Each year about one million visitors from around the world come to the museum. For more information, visit nationalmuseum.af.mil or call National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at (937) 255-3286. |

Aviation Trail Members Tour New Library |
To celebrate the mutual birthdays of Orville and Katharine Wright on Saturday, Aug. 19, Aviation Trail, Inc. (ATI) toured the new $64 million Dayton Metro Library. |
The tour was free with free parking underneath the library with access from St. Clair Street. The library's Dayton Room, where valuable artifacts related to Wilbur and Orville Wright are archived, was a highlight. Archivist Bill McIntire talked about the room and had on display various memorabilia from Wilbur and Orville Wright. Everyone shared the Wright's birthday cake in one of the buildings many conference rooms. The new library exists because of the generosity of Montgomery County taxpayers who voted "yes" to a $187 million levy to improve library facilities throughout the system. Thanks to all who came to enjoy this jewel in the crown of the Dayton Metro Library system. CLICK HERE to link to the ATI website "Events" page to see a slideshow of photos from the event. |
