National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to commemorate 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid

DAYTON, Ohio – On April 18, 1942, 80 men achieved the unimaginable when they took off from an aircraft carrier on a top secret mission to bomb Japan. These men, led by Lt. Col. James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle, came to be known as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders.
The raid was an extremely important event in the development of American air power. It marked the first combat use of strategic bombardment by the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II. While the attack itself caused little actual damage to Japanese war industry, the psychological impact on the Japanese military and the American public proved to be immense. It forced the Japanese military to pull forces back from the front lines to protect the home islands and showed Americans that the war could be won.
Today, just one of the men survive: Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” E. Cole, who served as Doolittle’s co-pilot on Crew No. 1. Cole, now 101 years old, plans to return to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in April to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the raid and to pay tribute to fellow Raider SSgt. David Thatcher, who passed away earlier this year.
“Mathematically, it shouldn't have worked out this way," Cole told The Missoulian last June. "I was quite a bit older, six years older, than David. Figuring the way gamblers figure, he would have been the last man.”
Anniversary events on April 17-18 are still being finalized but plans include the return of several B-25 Mitchell bombers landing on the runway behind the museum and being placed on static display; a memorial service and B-25 flyover (weather permitting).
The Air Force Museum Theatre is planning a living history event with films on the Doolittle Raid and the Air Force Museum Store will have commemorative merchandise available to purchase.
Each year since the end of World War II, with the exception of 1951, the Doolittle Raiders held an annual reunion. The museum had the privilege of hosting the Raiders in April 1965 (23rd), 1999 (57th), 2006 (64th), 2010 (68th) and 2012 (70th), before having their final toast to their fallen comrades on Nov. 9, 2013.
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is the world’s largest military aviation museum. With free admission and parking, the museum features more than 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles and thousands of artifacts amid more than 19 acres of indoor exhibit space. National Aviation Hall of Fame names ‘Class of 2017’

DAYTON, Ohio—The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) has revealed the names of four individuals elected as the Enshrinee Class of 2017, according to a NAHF announcement. The NAHF Class of 2017 represents a broad range of enduring contributions dating from the dawn of the jet age through the manned exploration of space. NAHF will enshrine the four in a ceremony at a place and on a date to be announced. The public will be able to buy tickets in advance.

Maj. Gen. Charles Bolden, Jr., USMC (Ret)—34 year Marine Corps aviation career included 14 years as member of NASA Astronaut Corps. Vietnam War fighter pilot and four-time Shuttle veteran who went on to become NASA Administrator.

The late Cmdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter, USN—Navy test pilot that as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts became the second American to orbit the earth. Helped design the Apollo lunar module and developed underwater training for spacewalks.

Robert J. Gilliland—Air Force jet fighter and test pilot personally recruited by Kelly Johnson to lead Lockheed Skunk Works testing of its record-breaking SR-71 spy plane. Has logged more test-flight hours above Mach 3 than any other pilot.

The late Sir Frank Whittle—U.K.-based “Founder of the Jet Age,” who built the first practical turbojet engine in 1937. Sir Whittle’s subsequent engine technology led directly to development of the jet aircraft industry in the U.S., to which Sir Whittle immigrated in 1976.
Each year, the NAHF Board of Nominations, a voting body comprised of 140-plus aviation professionals nationwide, selects a handful of previously nominated air and space pioneers to be recognized for their achievements with enshrinement into the NAHF. Since its founding in 1962, 233 men and women have been so honored.
The NAHF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1962 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964. Its mission is to honor America’s aerospace legends to inspire future leaders. Its headquarters and public Learning Center are co-located with the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. It operates a youth education program, other public outreach programs and annual enshrinement ceremony, and it collaborates with like-minded organizations. NAHF is a partner of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance.
Winter Hours for Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park

Beginning Monday, October 31, the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Hours of operation during the winter months will change to Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This change will only affect the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center. The Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site will remain open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (last tour at 3:30 pm). The Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center will resume 7-day operations on Sunday, March 5, 2017.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Barack Obama announced his intent to nominate the following individual to a key Administration post:
Amanda Wright Lane, Appointee for Member, Advisory Board of the National Air and Space Museum
Amanda Wright Lane is a Trustee for The Wright Brothers Family Foundation, a position she has held since 1999. Ms. Wright Lane serves on the boards of the National Aviation Heritage Alliance, Wright-Dunbar, Inc., and First Flight Foundation, positions she has held since 2004, 2006, and 2008, respectively. She previously served on the board of Dayton History from 2006 to 2011. Ms. Wright Lane is the great-grandniece of Orville and Wilbur Wright. In 2008, she was awarded the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Public Service Award. Ms. Wright Lane received a B.S. from Miami University of Ohio.
The group stopped in Dayton to visit the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park as part of an educational field trip across the United States. The Wright Brothers USA, a local company that licenses and markets The Wright Brothers name and trademark worldwide in in cooperation with the Wright Brothers Family Foundation, coordinated the Dayton stop.
“The group’s intention is to immerse the kids in the rich history of the Wright brothers, so they might gain inspiration from the legacy of Dayton’s favorite sons, who changed the world forever with their invention of the airplane,” said Doug Knopp, Wright Brothers USA partner.
Wilbur and Orville Wright formed the Wright Company in 1909 and built the factory buildings in 1910 and 1911. The factory was the first in America built for the purpose of manufacturing airplanes.
Knopp said Wright Brothers USA’s late co-founder and CEO, David Lightle of Tipp City, arranged the Dayton visit just prior to his death in August while in China on a business trip for the company.
“Out of respect for Dave, we will see his vision thru. We also see this as the start of aviation tourism from China to Dayton to experience our rich aviation heritage,” Knopp said.
A Chinese company, Jiabeicun Education Technology Ltd., organized the “Discovery Expedition” for the home-schooled student group, Knopp said.
The National Aviation Heritage Alliance (NAHA) hosted the Wright factory visit. Tony Sculimbrene, NAHA executive director, said the visit by Chinese students is the latest example of the historic airplane factory’s drawing power. In April, NAHA showed the site to actor-director Tom Hanks and David McCullough, author of the best-selling book The Wright Brothers.
“The factory is delivering on its promise as an international destination, and it’s not even open to the public. Imagine its potential once it’s restored as a unit of Dayton’s national park,” Sculimbrene said.
NAHA is negotiating to buy the factory buildings and the surrounding 54-acre site from the current property owner, Home Avenue Redevelopment LLC. Its goal is to make the historic buildings a unit of Dayton’s national park, as authorized by Congress in 2009.
NAHA’s plan for the remaining property is to guide its redevelopment in ways that will complement its aviation history while creating economic activity in the neighborhood. Dayton Metro Library has committed to buy approximately seven acres of the site for its new West Branch library.
NAHA conducts tours of the Wright factory with the permission of the property owner to raise awareness of its history and the need to preserve it. Free public tours are scheduled at 10 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month from April through November. The next tour is scheduled for Oct. 20.

Wright Company factory draws students from China

DAYTON, Ohio—The Wright Company factory showed its potential to draw international travelers Wednesday, Sept. 28, when a group of 22 students from China and their chaperones toured the West Dayton buildings that launched America’s aviation industry.
The 17 students, ages 7 to 11, and five adults walked in the footsteps of Wilbur and Orville Wright as they explored two unrestored buildings off West Third Street at Abbey Avenue. Displays of a large scale model of a Wright airplane and historical photos helped them visualize the pioneering aircraft production that took place more than a century ago in the now-vacant buildings.

David McCullough in new video ‘applauds' efforts to save Wright factory
DAYTON, Ohio—The campaign to save the Wright brothers’ factory has won a new supporter— David McCullough.
The author of the best-selling book The Wright Brothers endorses the effort in a new video filmed inside the historic factory.
“I applaud all of you who are working to save these buildings and to bring them back into being part of the story” of the Wright brothers, McCullough says in the video.
The National Aviation Heritage Alliance (NAHA) released the video Thursday, Sept. 1, on its YouTube channel with McCullough’s permission. NAHA interviewed McCullough for the video on April 19 following McCullough's tour of the factory.
Wilbur and Orville Wright formed the Wright Company in 1909 and built the company’s first factory building in Dayton in 1910. The company added a second building in 1911. The factory was the first in America built for manufacturing airplanes.
“These are symbolic or emblematic structures in that they contain a story of importance not just to this community, but to the country and to the world,” McCullough says.
Orville sold the Wright Company in 1915. The factory was the nucleus of what became the 54-acre Delphi Home Avenue Plant, which shut down in 2008.
NAHA, a nonprofit, has been working with the National Park Service, state of Ohio, city of Dayton and others to make the factory a unit of theDayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
“I’d like to be able to walk in here and see their airplanes being built at various stages,” McCullough says in the video. “I’d like to see the tools that were used. The saws, the lathes, that sort of thing. I’d like to see where they had lunch. I’d like to see the whole world, the whole reality of this community. This was a community in here, a community at work.”
“David has made it no secret that he reveres the Wright Brothers, and America's National Parks. And after several visits to our Dayton community, he was truly taken with our work to restore the Wright Company factory,” said Amanda Wright Lane, great-grandniece of the Wright brothers and a NAHA trustee.
NAHA is negotiating with the current property owner, Home Avenue Redevelopment LLC, to buy the 54-acre site. Dayton Metro Library has committed to locate its new West Branch on the site, an approximately $10 million investment.
NAHA projects it will need $4 million to buy the property, stabilize the buildings, make initial site improvements and begin redeveloping the remaining acres in ways that would complement the Wright Factory Unit of the national park. It has raised about $2 million so far in public and private funds.
At the request of many individuals wanting to contribute, it has added a donation page to its website.
In the video McCullough says, “I applaud all of you who are working to save these buildings and to bring them back into being part of the story. Those who went before us here, those who did things of merit and changed the world, deserve to be present, as it were, among us.”

Aviation Trail Celebration, August 19
Aviation Trail, Inc. traditionally hosts a social event for all of its members on Aug. 19, the mutual birthdays of Orville and Katharine Wright, and also the date of National Aviation Day. The event this year was a celebration at the Aviation Trail Visitor Center at 16 S. Williams Street. It began at 1:00 PM with a brief press conference and the official announcement of the acquisition of the historic Pekin Theatre Building, followed by an ice cream social and tour of the facility. Aviation Trail Incorporated was one of the organizations exhibiting at the open house weekend at the National Museum of the United States Air Force on June 11 and 12. The open house was in celebration of the opening of the new fourth hangar building whch was officially opened on June 8. Over 15,000 attendees toured the museum over the weekend, which was over twice the normal weekend attendance. The Parachute Museum was featured at the ATI table, along with an appearance each day of "Wilbear Wright" . "Wilbear" is the aviator teddy bear guide to the sites on The Aviation Trail. The slide below has some photos from the weekend, with several examples of visitors trying on parachute gear at the ATI exhibit, and various photos from around the museum.

After the event, the National Museum of the United States Air Force sent participating organizations a Certificate of Apprecieation for supporting the building opening event. The certificate includes a commemorative piece of ribbon from the ribbon cutting ceremony (shown above).
Solar Impulse Leaves Dayton

Solar Impulse 2, the solar powered electric aircraft, left Dayton at 4:00 AM on Wednesday, May 25, after a three day layover in it's historic 16 stage flight around the world. The next stop is Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, prior to New York, and then a flight accross the Atlantic. Pilots Bertrand Picard and Andre Borschberg take turns at the controls of this lightweight craft (about 5100 lbs.) with a 208' wingspan. This week's stop in the home city of the Wright Brothers is fitting for such a groundbreaking undertaking with the implications for the future of clean technology. A World War II Flight Surgeon’s Story
On Thursday night, May 26, WACO will host author S. Carlisle May as a first time guest speaker. As part of the WACO Aviation Lecture Series, May will recount the story of Dr. Lamb Myhr, a flight surgeon of World War II. Doors will open at 6:30 pm. and the lecture will begin at 7 pm.
Dr. Lamb Myhr was one of hundreds of thousands of young men who served his country in World War II. A flight surgeon in the United States Army Air Force, he served from Morocco to Germany and witnessed historic moments, including Generals Clark, Patton, and Eisenhower meeting to plan the invasion of Sicily.
As pilots and crew battled fatigue, extreme conditions, and devastating losses, Dr. Myhr healed, counseled, and taught them, often with limited resources. Informed by documents, research, and interviews with Dr. Myhr, A World War II Flight Surgeon’s Story, authored by S. Carlisle May, offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of a doctor on the front lines. It also illuminates the culture and community of an Army Air Force base, exploring the sanitation measures, mental and physical examinations, and medical procedures that Dr. Myhr performed. Complete with photographs and personal letters, this volume widens our understanding of a war that changed our world forever. May will be available to autograph copies of the book following the presentation.
S. Carlisle May was raised in a military family and spent time growing up in South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Germany. She is a prolific writer and the great-niece of Dr. Lamb Myhr. She received her BA in political science from Auburn University and worked as a substitute teacher for two decades. A prolific writer and frequent public speaker, May leads workshops across the nation. Through the National WWII Museum’s travel program, May followed the path of American and Allied forces from England to Normandy and into Germany. She also retraced the campaigns of the Allies in Malta and Sicily, Italy. A lifelong history enthusiast, May lives near Atlanta, Georgia, with her family.

All are welcome at the next meeting of the Huffman Prairie Aviation History Society, this coming Monday, May 2, 2016, at 7:00 p.m.
At this month’s meeting, we will be watching Beyond the Powder: The First Women’s Cross Country Air Race (Hemlock Films).
Beyond the Powder: The Legacy of the First Women’s Cross-Country Air Race is a documentary film that follows the 2014 Air Race Classic racers as they make their way across the country, while telling the story of the original race of 1929, also known as the Powder Puff Derby.
The first Women’s Air Derby in 1929 was flown from Santa Monica to the finish line in Cleveland, kicking off the National Air Races. The eyes of the country watched as these brave women made history flying cross-country, breaking into a competition that was thought to be for men only. They encountered sabotage, death, and all the difficulties of flying at the dawn of aviation.
Today the Powder Puff Derby continues as the Air Race Classic. The modern day racers carry out the legacy of the original racers with their adventurous and rebellious spirit. Showing that they were more than just their make-up, the original Derby contestants have inspired those flying today to truly push beyond the powder.
This event is free and open to the public. The meeting and presentation will take place at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center at 2380 Memorial Road (intersection of State Route 444 and Kauffman Road), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. There is ample free parking, and light refreshments will be provided.

Trailblazer Award
The ATI Board of Trustees chose the Museum and the Museum Foundation for their team efforts in completing the fourth museum building scheduled for its public debut June 8—privately financed by the Museum Foundation--and for their sustained excellence over the years in telling the Air Force story of aviation and aerospace achievements
ATI President Marvin Christian said, “It is Aviation Trail’s honor and privilege to recognize these organizations with our 2016 Trailblazer Award. Dayton and the Miami Valley are justifiably proud of the Museum’s many years of displaying our nation’s aviation and aerospace achievements to visitors from literally around the world.”
It was through the fund-raising efforts of the Museum Foundation that the Museum’s $40.8 million fourth addition became a reality. Since 1960 the Foundation has remained a philanthropic, nationally recognized, non-profit organization which assists the Museum with public fund raising and oversees various day-to-day operations of the Museum which attracts one million visitors annually.
In the new, fourth building, visitors will explore more than 70 aircraft in four galleries: Presidential, Research and Development, Space and Global Reach. The new 224,000 square-foot area also will have a walk-through Space Shuttle exhibit and three STEM learning nodes for student instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The new facility brings the museum’s total exhibit space to 19 acres with 360 aerospace vehicles and missile and thousands of artifacts. In addition to exhibits, there are within the museum an IMAX Theatre, Museum Store, the Valkyrie and Refueling cafes, an Air Force Museum Theatre, flight simulators, and office space for staff.
Aviation Trail hosts the Trailblazer event annually to mark the birthday of Wilbur Wright, April 16, 1867. This is the 33rd presentation of the Trailblazer Award during ATI’s 35-year history of promoting and supporting the area’s aviation heritage, especially sites linked to Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Aviation Trail has chosen the National Museum of the United States Air Force and the Air Force Museum Foundation as the dual recipients of this year’s prestigious Trailblazer Award.
The honor recognizes the Museum’s long history of excellence in telling the Air Force story, as well as the completion of its new $40.8 million fourth building, which was privately funded by the Air Force Museum Foundation.
The new building, which is scheduled to open to the public June 8, will house more than 70 aircraft, missiles, and space vehicles in four new galleries—Presidential, Research & Development, Space and Global Reach, along with three science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Learning Nodes.
The public is invited to the award luncheon scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 15, at the Hope Hotel and Conference Center where the Museum Director Lt. Gen. Jack Hudson (USAF Ret.) and the Foundation Chairman of the Board of Trustees Frances Duntz are scheduled to accept the award.
Details on reservations will be announced within the next couple weeks, but mark your calendars now for this exciting celebration.
This is the 33rd presentation of the Trailblazer Award during Aviation Trail’s 35-year history of promoting and supporting the area’s aviation history. The organization is delighted to make this dual presentation to two organizations that have created such wonderful opportunities for generations to learn and enjoy our country’s aviation and space exploration history.

AERO Carnival scheduled for September 10, 2016

The National Park Service has announced a list of activities for its AERO CARNIVAL will be held at Huffman Prairie on Saturday, September 10, 2016
This free event will include a multitude of activitiesfor the whole family throughout the day, from 10:30 to 5:00.
Come and explore the Great Wright Brothers Aero Carnival on Saturday, September 10 from 10:30 – 5:00 At the same time you can explore the field where Wilbur and Orville Wright developed the world’s first practical airplane.
Through activities and displays the Aero Carnival provides a glimpse back into the time of the Wrights. It will also provide a look at the history of aviation. With a flight simulator, airplanes on static display and with planes flying overhead, participants can experience the past, present and the future of aviation and aeronautical research.
The event is free of charge and is open to all. Huffman Prairie Flying Field in located on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with access through Gate 16A off of State Route 444. The event is sponsored by Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and by the 88th Air Base Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Wright Factory Tours Announced by National Aviation Heritage Area

NAHA has announced that the next factory tour is scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 10:00 AM.
The Wright Brothers formed the Wright Company in 1909 and built the first factory in 1910, adding a second building in 1911. The buildings, which later became part of a GM plant in Dayton, are now planned for restoration and NAHA is providing free public tours to help build community support for the restoration. The plan is to have a public tour every third Thursday of the month at 10:00 AM.

Fourth building to open June 8
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force’s new $40.8 million fourth building including aircraft such as SAM 26000 (Air Force One) and the only remaining XB-70 Valkyrie, will open to the public on June 8, 2016.
The 224,000 square foot building, which was privately financed by the Air Force Museum Foundation, will house more than 70 aircraft, missiles, and space vehicles in four new galleries - Presidential, Research and Development, Space and Global Reach, along with three science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) Learning Nodes.

112th Anniversary of First Powered Flight
Aviation Trail's Celebration of the 112th Anniversary of FIRST POWERED FLIGHT in 1903 honoring the Wright Brothers was held on December 17, 2015 at Dayton History's Carillon Park.
The event was in the Kettering Family Education Center with seasonal drinks, food and entertainment.
"Saving Airplanes and Telling Their Stories": The featured speaker at the event was Greg Herrick, president of the Aviation Foundation of America. His Golden Wings Flying Museum has more than 35 vintage aircraft, one of the largest holdings of its type in the U.S.

WACO glider theater takes off

TROY, Ohio—WACO Air Museum visitors can now experience the look and feel of the famous gliders that silently penetrated enemy lines during World War II.
The WACO glider theater is built inside and out to resemble one of the small CG-4A gliders WACO built in its Troy, Ohio factory during the war. Visitors can sit inside the glider on facing benches, just as troops did, and watch a video about the manufacturing of the gliders and their use in Europe and Asia.

The WACO factory produced more than 1,000 CG-4A gliders, while additional gliders were manufactured in other locations around the United States.
The WACO Air Museum is located at 1865 S. County Road 25A in Troy, Ohio, on the 77-acre Historic WACO Field along with the WACO Aviation Learning Center and a 2,200 foot grass runway (2,000 feet usable). The museum preserves the history of the WACO Aircraft Co., which was the largest U.S. manufacturer of civil aircraft in the 1920s and early ’30s. Visit wacoairmuseum.org for more information.

Air Force museum marks end of World War II

On Aug. 9, 1945, the B-29 bomber Bockscar dropped the “Fat Man” atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Closely following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, the Nagasaki attack proved America had the capacity to use nuclear weapons with devastating effect and led to Japan’s unconditional surrender and the end of World War II.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the war, and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force – where the B-29 Bockscar and an actual (but inert) “Fat Man” atomic bomb are on display—will commemorate it with several special events, according to a museum press release.

WACO to host IH Scout show

Historic WACO Airfield and Museum will host the 26th Annual IH Scout and Light Truck Nationals Friday through Sunday, August 14-16. The show will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The family-friendly event will include a swap meet with parts venders selling new, old and used parts; seminars, vehicle games and judging competition. Food vendors will be on site.
Admission to the event is $8 per day or $15 for the weekend. Admission is free to children under 12. The admission fee includes admission to the WACO Museum. Biplane rides will be available at extra cost.
The purpose of the event is to preserve and promote the legacy of International Harvesterproducts. Highlighted in the wide array of products are all IH motor trucks as well as the first mass-produced Sport Utility Vehicle, the Scout.
Parachute Museum Fifth Anniversary in 2015

The Parachute Museum is celebrating its fifth year of being open to the public as part of the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, Third and Williams Streets in Dayton, Ohio. Five years ago the Dave Gold family joined Aviation Trail, Inc. in a ribbon cutting ceremony. Prior to this special event, the Parachute Museum was open to the public in time for the 2003 First Flight Celebration. The museum at that time was incomplete, but with the Gold collection it was completed, but additions and changes continue.

Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument Hosts Summer Open House

"WILBERFORCE, OH – Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument will host a series of Open House events to encourage the community and visitors to learn about the Wilberforce Community, Colonel Charles Young, and the Buffalo Soldiers role in American History. The Open Houses will be held in the parlors at the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, located at 1120 US Hwy 42, Wilberforce, Ohio. Several open houses will be held in July on the following dates: Saturday, July 4, 11, 18, and 25 between 10-1 p.m.;and Sunday, July 5, and 19 between 1-4 p.m.
Park staff will provide a screening of films on the Buffalo Soldiers, a host of Junior Ranger activities, and guided tours of the site. Additionally, the park will release newly developed cell phone tours, and other curriculum-based programs that will be offered next school year during the summer open house series. "We are excited to be able to open our doors to our community to showcase the life and times of Charles Young and the Buffalo Soldiers," said Dr. Joy Kinard, Superintendent of the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument.
As a soldier, diplomat, and civil rights leader, Charles Young overcame stifling inequality to become a leading figure in the years after the Civil War when the United States emerged as a world power. His long and distinguished career as a commissioned officer in the United States Army made him a popular figure of his time and a role model for generations of new leaders. His house, more affectionately known as "Youngsholm" serves as the current face of the newest national park addition. This program is part of an ongoing series of public programs offered at the Colonel Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument to promote public understanding of history and special places that have been included in the national park system".

Ohio House Passes Resolution on Wrights as First in Flight

"By a 90-0 vote, the Ohio House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill reaffirming the Wright brothers as truly first in flight. The House voted on a resolution (HCR8) endorsing what most historians... have long believed: that a pair of brothers from Dayton were first to achieve controlled, powered flight". Doolittle Raider presents medal to Air Force Museum

Seventy three years to the day after Richard E. Cole sat next to legendary airman Jimmy Doolittle on a bombing run against Japan, the 99-year-old World War II aviator presented the Congressional Gold Medal commemorating the historic raid to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
The medal, the highest civilian honor Congress can bestow, will be displayed permanently at the museum.
Cole was one of 80 Army Air Force airmen who launched in 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers off the deck of the U.S.S Hornet in the daring raid that bombed Tokyo and four other Japanese cities.
The Dayton native who lives in Comfort, Texas and fellow Raider, David J. Thatcher, 93, of Missoula, Montana, were at the medal presentation ceremony Saturday with dozens of family members of many of the other airmen who flew on the mission. The two World War II airmen are the sole surviving Raiders.

Tom Hanks to produce Wright Brothers series

DAYTON, Ohio—The announcement that Tom Hanks will produce an HBO miniseries about the Wright brothers has sparked widespread interest by the entertainment and news media. A flurry of local news reports have followed Deadline.com‘s announcement that Hanks’ production company Playtone would produce the series based on the forthcoming book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian David McCullough. His publisher, Simon & Schuster has scheduled The Wright Brothers for release on May 5.
Ohio panel passes Wright first-in-flight bill

COLUMBUS, Ohio—An Ohio legislative committee has passed a bill that would repudiate the claim that Gustave Whitehead flew a powered airplane in Connecticut two years before Ohio’s Wright brothers flew in North Carolina. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee voted 11-0 in favor of Ohio House Concurrent Resolution 8 (HCR-8), according to Danielle Giannantonio, an aide to Ohio Rep. Rick Perales, the bill’s sponsor. (Click here to download the resolution.) The bill next goes to the full House. NAHA supported the bill in a March 24 committee hearing with testimony presented by Executive Director Tony Sculimbrene and Trustee Amanda Wright Lane, great-grandniece of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Tim Gaffney, NAHA’s communications director, also testified as author of The Dayton Flight Factory, a book about the Wright brothers. In 2013, Connecticut’s governor signed an act proclaiming Whitehead, not the Wright brothers, the first to fly a powered, heavier-than-air flying machine. Historians have dismissed the Whitehead claim repeatedly over the years, citing a lack of convincing evidence.

Paul Laurence Dunbar Progressive Dinner

The National Park Service and the Dunbar House State Memorial will celebrate the birth of Paul Laurence Dunbar with a progressive dinner on Monday, June 29. The event will begin at 6:15 pm, at the Old Courthouse on the northwest corner of Third and Main Streets. Participants will travel by charter buses to two sites associated with Dunbar and his life before being returned to the Old Courthouse for the main dinner and a short program. Tickets are available for $65 per person from Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
Paul Laurence Dunbar is credited as the first writer to put the African American experience in all its diverse forms before a broader audience. His work has become the foundation for many other writers and the inspiration for all who have dreams unfulfilled.

Last Wright family member to have personally known Orville dies

Marianne Miller Hudec, 79, the last member of the Wright family to have known Orville Wright personally, died earlier this month in Newton, Mass.
Born March 11, 1935, in Dayton to Harold S. Miller and Ivonette Wright Miller, Marianne was the grandniece of Orville and Wilbur Wright. She died on March 5.

The Aviation Trail, Inc. Board of Trustees approved a proposal for the preservation of organizational records at the March 11 board meeting. The Special Collections and Archives of Wright State University will be the repository for the records of Aviation Trail, Inc. The records will be arranged, described, preserved and made accessible for research according to the highest archival standards.
